Although Christelle and I didn’t know it, the connection began on Pusey Lane in Oxford a little over 50 years ago in the apartment of an American couple named Sheldon and Davey Vanauken. It was at their apartment, called “The Studio,” that they welcomed friends and fellow students to evenings of laughter and serious discussions. Through friendships strengthened at The Studio, keen discussions about religion, and the erudition and faith of C.S. Lewis, first Davey and then Sheldon converted to Christianity. Their conversions changed the trajectory of their lives and sent them, unknowingly, on a dramatic course bound in time to impact a young school teacher in New Zealand named Christelle.
